Moles In Lawns
What Are Moles?
Moles are burrowing mammals that often inhabit residential lawns. They are especially common around wooded lots and natural areas of vegetation. Their tunneling habits destroy the root systems from your grass, potentially causing extensive and expensive damage. However, moles are also known to be natural aerators. These animals are insectivores, with earthworms being their main food source.
How To Spot Mole Damage
Moles are known for their characteristic volcano-like mounds of dirt that can pop up throughout your yard. These pests can be found in soil where organic material is plentiful. Additionally, moles can appear at a higher rate due to a high population of pests in your soil.
Does Grub Control Help with Mole Control?
This is a common misconception. Since mole’s predominantly feed on earthworms, eliminating and preventing grubs is not guaranteed to reduce the mole population. Virginia Green does offer a grub control treatment program to help manage the grub population in the soil. This service can be beneficial and effective since grubs can be a significant turf pest if the population is high enough. Moles are subsurface root feeders that can cause an overall thin, weak look to your yard.
What Are Some Mole Control Options?
There are many options available for treating existing moles. These include, but are not limited to:
- Trapping - these humane devices are used to isolate the animal and help with transportation away from your property.
- Noisemakers - whether ultrasonic or traditional, these devices when placed near mole holes can help with deterring this pest.
- Owning a Cat - having a feline friend can help with pest management and deterrence on your property.
- Baiting - while not the preferred method, this can be taken to target your infestation and control their activity.
