What’s a Mole, Anyway?
Moles are small insectivorous mammals belonging to the Talpidae family. The most common species in Virginia is the eastern mole, typically 5 to 7 inches in length. These animals are built for life underground, with small or vestigial eyes and ears, a hairless pointed snout, and powerful forelimbs designed for digging.
Despite the common misconception, moles are not rodents, and they’re very different from voles. While voles eat plants and roots, often leaving entrances near the base of vegetation, moles feed almost entirely on insects, including earthworms, grubs, and other soil-dwelling pests. They don’t eat your grass or plants- they just happen to damage them while hunting for food beneath the surface.
Moles typically make their homes in high, dry areas but prefer to hunt in soil that’s shaded, cool, moist, and rich in food- in other words, healthy, well-maintained lawns.
The Real Problem: Lawn Damage
While moles don’t feed on grass or roots, their tunneling activity disfigures turf, loosens the soil, and can tear up the root systems of grass as they search for food. The resulting damage often appears as raised ridges, soft spots, or “volcano-like” mounds of dirt. Left unchecked, mole tunnels can compromise your lawn’s health and appearance, leading to thin, weak patches and costly repairs.
Packing in the tunnels and thoroughly watering the affected areas can help turf recover over time, but prevention and ongoing control are key.
How Our Mole Program Works
Virginia Green now offers a 10-application mole control program from February through November, with one treatment applied per month.
Our program uses a science-backed, non-lethal strategy:
- Treatments are applied directly to the lawn and absorbed into the soil.
- The product coats underground food sources and plants, making the area uninviting for moles.
- As the food becomes less attractive, moles naturally move away in search of better feeding grounds.
We’re not trying to harm the moles- we’re simply making your lawn a place they no longer want to be.
Smarter Pest Control with IPM
At Virginia Green, we follow an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach. This means combining multiple strategies for the best long-term results, because no single method is 100% effective on its own.
To boost your success, we recommend:
- Reducing food sources like grubs (check out our grub control program)
- Trapping or baiting in high-activity areas
- Installing fencing to protect garden beds and other high-value zones
A tailored approach that includes our monthly treatments is the best way to keep moles from returning.
