Message from Gil: Summer Lawn Care Starts with the Basics

As we move through the heart of summer, the combination of heat, humidity, and occasional dry conditions is creating stress for many lawns across our area. Proper watering and mowing practices are especially important right now. We recommend watering deeply in the early morning as needed and maintaining the recommended mowing height to help your lawn stay healthy and resilient. During extended dry periods, consider reducing mowing frequency to help conserve moisture and minimize additional stress on the turf.

We're also seeing increased activity from several common summer pests, including ticks, as well as ideal conditions for lawn diseases such as brown patch. Preventive care and early detection remain the best ways to avoid more significant problems later in the season.

Don't forget about your trees and shrubs, either. Heat, drought stress, insects, and disease can all impact landscape plants during the summer months, making regular monitoring especially important.

Thank you for trusting Virginia Green with your lawn and landscape. Our team is committed to helping you enjoy a healthy, beautiful property all season long, and we're always here if you have questions or need assistance.

Help Your Lawn Stay Strong This Summer 05.27.2026

Spring has been a busy season, and at Virginia Green, we are not slowing down. As summer approaches, your lawn may show signs of stress from heat and reduced rainfall. Here are two ways to get ahead of it:

  • Raise your mowing height. Set your mower to its tallest setting. We recommend 3.5 to 4 inches. Taller grass shades the soil, retains moisture, and handles heat far better.
  • Upgrade to the Estate Program. Our 11-application Estate Program provides extra summer protection, including disease control, grub control, and additional weed treatments.

Summer also brings mosquitoes, ticks, and other insects right when you want to enjoy your outdoor spaces. Virginia Green’s perimeter pest control helps keep insects out of your home, while our mosquito and tick treatments help protect your family and pets.

Contact us today to get started on any of these services.

Thank you for trusting Virginia Green with your lawn care, tree and shrub, and pest control needs. Reach us anytime through our website or speak with your service leader during your next treatment.

Message from Gil: Spring Is Here. Let’s Get Your Lawn Ready 04.10.2026

We love this time of year- warmer days, green grass, and the arrival of spring flowers. As the days get longer, the Virginia Green team looks forward to helping you enjoy being outdoor in your landscape.

Spring is also the return of those pests in your landscape. Virginia Green offers perimeter pest control, mosquito, and flea and tick applications. We also have a solution for those pesky moles tunneling through the grass. Please ask your service leaders about our different options or explore our programs on our website

While we hope for regular rainfall, the weather can be unpredictable. Please take a moment to inspect your irrigation systems or prepare your hoses and sprinklers. Virginia Green recommends 1.5 to 2 inches per week for your lawn. If we get some rain, this reduces the amount of water to apply. Don’t just set your system and forget about it till November, please take time to check your lawn periodically and make sure it is getting sufficient rainfall. Winter Protection Today for a Greener Spring 02.12.2026

So far, this winter has brought the typical mix of snow, ice, and cold temperatures across Central Virginia. While weather has occasionally adjusted our schedule, our Virginia Green Service Leaders have continued winter applications whenever conditions allow, preparing lawns for the transition into spring. As daylight increases, fescue lawns will soon begin to regain their rich green color.

Snowfall is often beneficial for lawns. It acts as a protective blanket, shielding turf from harsh winds that can cause winter desiccation, and as it melts, it provides helpful moisture. This is a great time to sign up for our Tree and Shrub services, our winter applications include nutrients that support recovery from normal winter injury, helping turf grow out of any browned leaf tissue once temperatures rise and mowing resumes. Learn more in our blog, "Winter Lawn Care Tips in Virginia."

Ice melt products, however, can cause salt injury along driveways and sidewalks if overapplied. Using products containing magnesium chloride or calcium chloride and avoiding excessive use can help reduce damage. If injury occurs, heavy watering can help flush salts from the soil, and our fertilizer applications can assist with recovery. In severe cases, reseeding may be needed.

We are also continuing to apply lime and potassium to strengthen root systems ahead of spring. And remember, February 27th is the final day to receive 5% off your 2026 services with our prepay discount through your Virginia Green portal or by calling 804 285 6200.

Thank you for trusting Virginia Green to care for your lawn and landscape. We look forward to the season ahead.
