What is Soil?
Soil is far more than just dirt; it's a rich blend of organic material, minerals, air, and water that forms the bedrock of a healthy, vibrant lawn. Due to its composition, soil is a resource that takes significant time to form, averaging hundreds of years to develop. For turf management in Virginia, the primary focus is on the top 4-6 inches of soil, known as the O and A horizons. Characteristics of Soil
Physical Characteristics
Texture
Soil texture is determined by the ratio between three particle sizes: sand (largest), silt (smaller), and clay (microscopic). The ideal soil, known as loam, has a balanced mix of these textures, providing the best conditions for development and growth of grass.
Pore Space
Soil texture affects pore space and water movement. Sandy soils have large pores, leading to quick water absorption but poor nutrient retention. Clay soils have smaller pores, causing slow drainage but better nutrient and water retention. Loam offers the best balance, retaining water and nutrients effectively while ensuring proper drainage.
Organic Material
Although only a small part of soil, organic matter significantly enhances soil properties. Composed of decomposed plants, animals, and microbes, it improves soil porosity, reduces compaction, increases water-holding capacity, and boosts microbial activity.
Sandy Soil vs. Clay Soil
- Sandy Soils: Dry quickly, poor nutrient retention, resist compaction, rarely waterlogged, low in organic matter retention.
- Clay Soils: Drain slowly, prone to waterlogging, easily compacted, good nutrient and organic matter retention.
- Loam Soils: Preferred for healthy lawns, offering a balanced environment for growth.
Chemical Characteristics
Soil pH
Soil pH is a critical measure for nutrient availability and root growth. Virginia soils tend to be acidic (pH below 7), and when pH drops below 6.5, nutrient absorption is compromised, and grass roots may become stunted. Since pH operates on a logarithmic scale, a drop from 6 to 5 makes the soil ten times more acidic. Lime is commonly used to raise pH and reduce acidity, with clay soils often requiring more lime to achieve the desired balance.
Soil Testing
Completing a soil test is essential for understanding soil’s chemical characteristics, including nutrient levels, soil pH, cation exchange capacity, and organic matter percentage. Accurate sampling is critical, as a small sample scales into a large volume of soil.
