Best Time of Year for Lawn Fertilization
When should I fertilize my cool-season grass lawn?
The most important fertilization window for fescue and other cool-season grasses is fall, specifically September through
November. Approximately 70% of your lawn's annual nitrogen should be applied during this period. A light spring application in
April–May is optional, and you should apply zero nitrogen during summer months (June–August) to avoid promoting disease.
Why is fall the most important fertilization season?
Cool-season grasses like fescue, bluegrass, and ryegrass experience their strongest root growth in fall. Fertilizing during this
window builds energy reserves that fuel spring green-up, increases density to crowd out weeds, and strengthens the plant's
ability to survive summer heat stress. Fall fertilization is the single most impactful thing you can do for a cool-season lawn.
Can I fertilize in summer?
No. Applying nitrogen fertilizer to cool-season grasses during hot summers promotes fungal disease, increases water
demand, and can cause fertilizer burn. Virginia Green monitors your lawn during summer but withholds heavy nitrogen
applications to protect turf health. Estate program customers receive disease treatments instead.
How many applications per year?
Virginia Green's Premium program includes 7 precisely timed applications throughout the year. Our Estate program includes 11
applications with additional disease treatments, grub control, a maintenance application of lime, and soil testing for comprehensive
lawn health management.
What does a winterizer do?
A winterizer is a late-fall fertilizer application (typically November) that provides nutrients for root storage over winter. The
grass absorbs these nutrients and stores them in the root system, fueling rapid green-up and early growth the following spring.
It's one of the most important applications of the year for cool-season lawns.
When should I start fertilizing Bermuda or Zoysia?
Warm-season grasses like Bermuda and Zoysia should be fertilized during their active growth period, which runs from April through August in Virginia. Begin fertilizing after the grass has fully greened up and soil temperatures are consistently above 65°F. Avoid fertilizing too early in spring when the grass is still dormant.
How much nitrogen does warm-season grass need?
Bermuda grass typically needs 3–5 pounds of nitrogen per 1,000 square feet per year, while Zoysia requires 2–3 pounds. These amounts should be split across multiple applications during the active growing season rather than applied all at once. Virginia Green calibrates each application to deliver the right amount at the right time.
Why is fall potassium important?
Applying potassium in fall strengthens cell walls and improves cold hardiness, helping warm-season grasses survive winter dormancy with less damage. Potassium also improves drought tolerance and disease resistance. Stop nitrogen applications about one month before the first expected frost, but continue potassium for winter preparation.
